Vimeo alternatives for course creators and training teams

Pellio team

Vimeo is a good video host. Course creators and training teams usually start looking elsewhere for three reasons: they want proof that students watched (not just that a video played), they want lessons that only play for enrolled students, and they want their storage costs to stay sensible as the library grows.

What to check in a Vimeo alternative

  • Per-student watch data. Can you see how much of a lesson each student watched, and does seeking ahead count as watching?
  • LMS integration. Does it work with your LMS’s completion, or only embed a player?
  • Privacy that matches courses. Domain restrictions are a start; signed, per-student playback is better for paid lessons.
  • Migration. Can you bring your Vimeo library across with titles, captions and folders, without re-uploading by hand and editing every lesson?
  • Price at your size. Compare storage and seats at the size you’ll be in a year, not today.

The alternatives

Pellio

A video host built around knowing who watched. Lessons in LifterLMS, LearnDash, Tutor LMS and Sensei can complete only when the student has really watched (skipping doesn’t count), members-only lessons play only for logged-in students, and the whole Vimeo library imports with titles, descriptions, captions, privacy and folders. On WordPress, the free plugin swaps your old Vimeo embeds in bulk, with one-click undo. Plans start at $10 a month billed yearly, against Vimeo’s $12 (both checked September 2026).

Wistia

Strong for marketing video (lead capture, SEO, marketing automation), but not built for courses: no LMS integrations, and noticeably more expensive.

YouTube

Free, but unlisted videos can be shared by anyone with the link and you can’t control what YouTube shows around them. Fine for free previews, not for paid lessons.

Self-hosting in WordPress

Uploading MP4s to your media library avoids a monthly bill but costs you adaptive streaming (buffering on slow connections), bandwidth on your web host and any watch data. It rarely holds up past a handful of lessons.

Moving from Vimeo without breaking your course

  1. Import your library (Pellio needs a Vimeo API token, used once and never stored).
  2. Check a few lessons in the new player.
  3. Swap the embeds across your site, then turn on watch-to-complete lesson by lesson.
