Alpha testing guide

Thanks for testing Pellio. This page covers what the alpha includes, how to get set up, a checklist for each kind of tester, and what to put in a bug report. Everything else in these docs describes the product as it is today.

What’s in the alpha

  • The Pellio dashboard at pellio.io/app: upload and manage videos, privacy, share links, analytics, the learner log and settings.
  • The Pellio player: what viewers see in embeds, on share pages and on WordPress sites.
  • The WordPress plugin: a block and shortcode, members-only videos, migration from other players, and integrations with LifterLMS, LearnDash, Tutor LMS, Sensei LMS, page builders, SEO and cookie consent plugins. Download the latest version from pellio.io/download/wordpress. Installed from there, it keeps itself up to date.
  • A demo site with a LifterLMS course, shared by all testers. Ask the Pellio team for a login. Please don’t change its settings or content: other people are testing on it too.

Get set up

  1. Create an account at pellio.io/app/sign-up and upload a video or two. Use your own footage if you can: it tests more than a sample would.
  2. For WordPress, use a staging or test site, not a live one. Install the plugin zip (Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin), then Pellio → Settings → Connect to Pellio.
  3. For course testing, install LifterLMS (or LearnDash, Tutor LMS or Sensei LMS) on that site and make a course with two or three lessons.

What to test

Pick the checklists that match what you’d use Pellio for. Each item links to the page that explains it.

Video hosting

  • Upload a large file, close the tab halfway, and upload it again: it should resume. Uploading

  • Try each privacy setting, a viewer password, a share link that expires in an hour, and blocking a country. Privacy and access

WordPress

  • Add a Pellio Video block, pick a video from your library, and upload one straight from the editor. WordPress plugin
  • Make a video members-only with your membership plugin, and check it as a logged-out visitor. Members-only videos
  • On a site with YouTube, Vimeo or Wistia embeds, run Pellio → Migration, then undo it. WordPress plugin
  • With a caching, SEO or cookie consent plugin you already use, check that videos still play and show up as they should. Page builders, SEO and caching, Cookie consent

Courses (LifterLMS and other LMSs)

  • Require a lesson video to be watched before the lesson can be completed, then try to get around it as a student: skip ahead, speed up, open it in two tabs. LifterLMS, LearnDash, Tutor LMS and Sensei LMS
  • Turn on an attestation with a typed name, and sign it as a student.
  • Download a course’s watch evidence CSV, and turn on the weekly progress report with Send a report now.
  • Replace a lesson’s video with Completion must be on the latest version on, and check the student is asked to watch it again.

Compliance and L&D

  • Open the Learner log, click Verify again, and export it. Compliance training
  • Connect an xAPI LRS (SCORM Cloud has a free one) and check statements arrive.
  • Download a SCORM package and load it into an LMS you use (Moodle, TalentLMS, Docebo, SCORM Cloud). This hasn’t been tried in many LMSs yet, so reports are especially useful.
  • Turn on the compliance player options (no skipping ahead, speed limit, pause when hidden, viewer watermark) and try to get around them.

WordPress multisite

  • Network-activate the plugin and try both connection modes in Network Admin → Pellio. WordPress multisite

Reporting what you find

Send reports to whoever invited you to the alpha. Small things count: confusing wording, a slow page, anything you expected to find and couldn’t. For a bug, include:

  • what you did, what you expected, and what happened instead;
  • the page address, and the video’s address (pellio.io/v/…) if it’s about a video;
  • your browser and device;
  • a screenshot or screen recording if you can;
  • for WordPress: the WordPress and Pellio plugin versions, and the Status table at the bottom of Pellio → Settings (it checks the connection and compatibility with your other plugins).

Known limitations

  • Videos are streamed at up to 1080p.
  • SCORM packages are SCORM 1.2. SCORM 2004 and cmi5 aren’t available yet.
  • Importing from Vimeo and Wistia, and the Mailchimp and HubSpot integrations, haven’t yet been tested with many real accounts.
  • The WordPress plugin isn’t on WordPress.org yet. Install it from pellio.io.
  • Geo-blocking works out the viewer’s country from their IP address, so a VPN changes it.
